Well I've tried the A3 with a new stereo 2.5mm plug (tip to PTT, Ring to Microphone) and my old boom microphone (Icom HS-15, worked with A20), result PTT is fine but nobody can hear me.
So where can I buy a boom microphone with whatever cables or 12V amplifier is required to get the A3 to work? I don't really want to start soldering circuit boards, and bolting bits together, as I have enough dodgy wiring in my glider already.

Simon,
I used an Icom A-3 with the Icom Headset Adapter OPC-499 and a Plantronics MS 50/T30 lightweight headset that clips to my sunglasses as the radio in my L-33 for a couple of years. It was really solid and nobody believed I was using a 'handheld.' I had trouble with it at first, when I tried to use an older Icom headset adapter. Symptom was that it transmitted carrier only, no voice when I pressed the PTT. Worked great once I got the newer headset adapter .
I doubt you will need any amplifier. Icom changed the radio wiring when they added a 'sidetone' feature so older accessories don't usually work. I found wiring diagrams showing how to connect aviation headsets to most Icoms on an ultralight site in Australia a couple of years ago. I just looked for it again without success. If you can find it, you can probable just rewire the old boom mike.
