You can get a basic hand held GPS for super cheap, why use anything else?

At the very basic level, just look outside the cockpit and look at a map... Other than that, any cheap secondhand GPS will do.

Get a cheap GPS and strap it to your leg with velcro. Enter in the possible landing-out spots and airfields. Using the polar (and an article in Soaring several years ago (www.ssa.org/Magazines/ListOnlineArticleDtl.asp?id=3) construct yourself a spreadsheet of altitude vs distance out and add 1000' for safety. Now you can at least know how high you have to be to get to a landable spot with 1000' to spare. Next put in your turnpoints, and off you go!
