I own and fly an airplane (U.S.) but would like the experience of a glider. I'll have about two and one-half weeks to enjoy Southern France in July, and was wondering if the school at Fayence would give primary glider instruction to a power pilot to the point of license (if possible) or solo flight. Anybody know? If they won't or can't then would another school in the area (e.g., Saint Auban) do so?

Will my third-class medical be accepted, or would I need to see a French flight surgeon?

Lastly, does anyone know if it's necessary to make arrangements well in advance, or can I just show up on their doorstep with my papers clutched in my hand?

Why not just call them and ask? There's a list of clubs in that region with phone numbers at

Hi Denton,

I have flown out af Fayence in the spring for a few years now, very friendly and competent people. I don't know about their basic training (they sure do it a lot it seems) and how they would handle a US power license. - I guess that you have already checked http://www.aapca.net/

Happy soaring, Lars Peder
