Why can't we do it here in Alaska?
Eklutna lake would be perfect. The wave forms just above the west end.

The rope doesn't break just because it's cold. But the rotor helps. On wednesday the 27th (the day with all the diamonds), we had two rope breaks due to severe turbulence in the rotor (at ~1000m QFE).
There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing. (It rhymes better in Norwegian, though.) Actutally, it wasn't that cold, at least not at reasonble altitudes, the sun warmed and the air was pretty dry and warm anyway; you've heard about föhn, haven't you?

Well, I don't know about your place, but here in Norway föhn and waves are kind of connected phenomena, if you've got one the other usually follows.

If I understand correctly, 'fohn' is a down-slope, relatively warm wind. Here in Colorado we get those too-Chinook winds. They don't always come with wave though. The wave can bounce off an inversion (cold) layer of air against the ground, often about 1000-2000 feet (300-600m or so) thick . It can be cold and calm on the ground when we take off, the inversion blows out, and its warm and windy when we land.
Cheers,
