Thamkyou all for your suggestions. The problem is still there, regardless of whether I connect before or after booting. The Colibri shows an OK connect, but trying to read it fails every time with a 'failure to read logbook' message. Troubleshooting the PC says that the COM ports are just fine, but they think something called a 'MS serial ballpoint' is connected.

The Colibri works fine on my old PCs, the PC hardware works fine with everything else, the main suspect is XP but MS support is a cosmic joke. In despair, I'll try to connect the Colibri via a USB-serial adapter when I can get one. Any more suggestions most welcome.

Ian,

XP and LXE and COM is not an easy one and lots of surprises.

I had success with the following procedure:

- when you start reading the logger keep moving the mouse pointer to 'keep XP busy'. I was able to download from a few XP machines this way which didn't work otherwise (same problem as you describe and all com port yest running fine)

I hope this helps ...

cheers

Ernie
