I was told recently that a Discus CS was different and less desirable than a Discus B because the CS did not have any carbon fiber in it, while the B model had carbon in the fuselage and the wings.

I own a B model and know that there is a carbon fiber spar cap, but was unaware of any other carbon in the aircraft from reading the manuals. They refer to the structure as GFRP (glass filled reinforced plastic) if I recall correctly, and they do mention the carbon spar cap.

Does anyone know definitively whether there really is a difference in the two models other than where they are made?

I've considered getting a newer model CS in the future instead of the inevitable refinishing, so I would like to know for sure.

Thanks for any input.

I think you are right in thinking that you were misinformed. The Discus B only had carbon spar caps . When we bought a Discus BT in 1992 a carbon fuselage was an additional cost option.

I got the first Discus B in the USA and I know for sure that (at least the early ones) only had carbon in the spar cap.

I flew a Discus b for a while, and read the flight manual over, as well as doing some wing repair due to an outlanding near Ontur, Spain. The only carbon fiber I found was in the spar caps. The difference between Discus a and b is that the b model have a longer fuselage, allowing for a larger cockpit for tall people. I'm not sure about the CS. Nice ship all over, a delight to rig and to fly, but I find the ASW-24 more agile and the cockpit is a bit roomier.

The 'CS' is built in the Czech Republic and a few more hours are spent on finishing her because of the cost effective labor rate. Minor differences include a tailwheel in the CS vs. the skid. They are constructed the same way.
