Hopefully I will not start a grand debate but I would be grateful for some input on what must be a decision as old as aviation - which aircraft to buy when one has narrowed to search to two? Clearly this forum is the place to ask such a question. So, can any one offer some direct and succinct advice as to which glider is preferable. If one were to be very greedy one might also ask what a reasonable price might be for such a glider (given good condition, moderate time and a good trailer as a minimum) but this might just be asking a bit much. Finally, should I just get the get the DG 300?

Many thanks in advance.

I have an ASW19b and it has been a lot of fun to fly over the last couple of years and I have never flown a DG to really comment. My advice would be to fly each one and see which one feels the best to you. I believe it is pretty subjective 8-).

If my DG-200 is any indication buy the DG, very happy with it. my 1978 model 200 has the original gel coat that is in great condition. It has had dings and stuff patched over the years but is in great shape considering the age. Most Schliechers are well built but the gel coat is inferior.

Yes it is very subjective! I have flown the ASW19 and never liked it. I was much more comfortable in the Pegase or LS4.

never flew DG, my feelings from 19 was -low lying wing, quite soft, which was comfortable in thermals, circling nice, but painful rolling on ground when in tow, especially on 'not golf course like airfield'. I think not completely straightforward to new pilots in circling slow and low (I saw on among trees after such attempt)...

I have flown the club version of the DG101 (fixed wheel), and I have also flown the ASW19 quite a bit. Both are comfortable for long flights. Visibility in the long canopy DG was excellent under certain conditions, but reflections from your feet moving on the rudder pedals can be very distracting. I personally prefer the ASW19 but I think you would have to fly both before making a personal decision. I cannot comment on performance of the DG as I never got to fly the 101G, but I can confirm that the'19 has fantastic handling and is great fun to fly. Handles (and seems to climb) even better with about 100lbs of water on. Jon

Had a DG101G which is the model with a standard horizontal stabilizer and elevator (the previous models had an all flying tail elevator) and a one piece canopy. The cockpit was extremely comfortable. Handling in thermals was very well behaved and you could trim it out and park it in the thermal if that was your wish. I just loved it. To tell you the truth I was heart broken when I sold it. From my experience, if I were in your shoes the DG would take it.

If you are 1,75 metre tall or less, the ASW (or its French cousin Pégase) will be a lot more confortable than a DG. Maybe it's the opposite if you are very tall.

DG101 - World Club Class Champion -2001 ASW-19B - World Standard Class Champion -1978

Fly both, see which you like, best package for money.Forget DG300! Too much money for too little improvement in performance. Try an LS1f!

Yeah I'm trying to figure out why DG-300's hold thier value so good? Did I miss something years ago, I always thought a LS-4 would beat a 300 or was it the good pilots were flying LS-4's? What is a LS1f like?
