Hi all, Any ideas how to create these colored markings on the speedindicator? I tried with normal colored plastic tape but it can't maintain the circular shape when the instrument gets hot in the cockpit. I could use paint and a pencil, but I know for sure that my hand is not still enough to create a nice result.... Can I buy tape in this colored spiral shape anywhere? I am definitely not the only on trying to create a nice result with this, or...?
Any hint will be highly appreciated.
Regards

So merge these two methods - cover the area around requested curve with tape, then use the paint

Find a dealer that handles Winter Airspeed indicators. They have self stick decals designed to go on the face of the instrument (underneath the glass) for $5 or $10. You will need to make, borrow, or buy a spanner wrench to remove the glass and probably a new O-ring seal for under the glass.
Whole job should take about 20 minutes once you have the correct items.

I would not recommend someone without the appropriate maintenance authority playing around with airspeed indicators which are legally required instruments and critical to safety of flight. What happens if a tape solution you apply doesn't saty stuck down over time and lifts catching the needle? Or your bang the instrument to hard on your workbench because you don't know how to handle instruments? Etc. etc.
I would get a competant aircraft instrument maintenance shop to do the job. Then they are responsible. It might cost you a few dollars. So what - there are always bucket loads of other jobs with gliders and trailers which you can do to save dollars.

SaltoW, maybe you can reference USOG, if they ever get enough respondents. They might be able to offer some tips. Speaking of tips, ever heard of any for a Salto? Here is another instance where USOG could be useful. What the heck is USOG? Why, it's the Unofficial Salto Owner's Group, of course.

Surely the aircraft will cease to fly if this happens. If it happens at 20 000 ' the wings may actually fall off!
Come on guys, has common sense completely gone out of the window? I'm not suggesting a return to the pioneering days of aviation where people actually taught themselves to fly after having built their own flimsy aircraft but give the guy some credit. Before going solo you should be able to perform a safe circuit and landing with a blank panel. If you can't do this then you shouldn't be flying an aircraft with single, non redundant instrument systems.

Great... a search for Winter instruments on the net got me to this page (http://www.wingsandwheels.com/page21.htm). Now I know it exsists - thanks.

Go to your local decent hobby shop, one that carries radio control aircraft. Get Monokote trim sheets (not the trim tape) in the colors you need.
Measure for the appropriate diameter and cut rings out of the trim sheet for the various colors you need. Clean the face of the ASI with rubbing alcohol before attaching the tape. Works great. Jim N483SZ

Seems to me WIngs and Wheels had an ASI marking kit you could purchase.
