Hi folks,

About to buy a new data logger and the Colibri sounds pretty good (price/performance etc). Anyone out there with experience using a Colibri, and how does it compare to other loogers on the market? Any advice is welcome.

Deniz,

I bought a Colibri this summer, it works very well as a logger. Convient to install and use. It's use for navigation is limited, though, since the user interface is 3 lines of text. It's real nice for flying a task, but not so good for where you are in general, or what are the nearest airports, etc. It does give winds, calculated by drift while circling, and ground speed and track.

The software that comes with it 'LXE' is usable, and is getting better all the time.

You could look at the Colibri manual at
www.lxnavigation.si

I haven't used any other logger, so can't compare.

Have fun

I got one for three seasons now. It never failed on me (pretty important for a logger). Only disadvantage compared to Cambridge and Volkslogger is the waypoint dataformat. The WP file is a binary. This means that you cannot edit it with a text editor. There are, however conversion tools incorperated in programs as SeeYou, Strepla etc.and ther may be some shareware around.

Just keep in mind; It is just a logger, features like wind calculation and navigation a are bonus.

The only real drawback is not being able to set the active task from a PC or CE device. This means you have to have some access to the unit.

I can set mine from a pc. Usually I do this at home. I really appreciate the memory wrap around. It has LOTS of memory and you like, but resolution is as good as the recording will allow (1 meter).

like, but resolution is as good as the recording will allow (1 meter). It uses an external antenna. I had to replace the bnc connector once. I have used more than one type of antenna, they all worked. This can be viewed as an advantage if your plane is tight on space. You install the antenna somewhere it will work and put the little box somewhere it will fit.

You can set a task but you can't make it active.

I have one and it works fine. The LXE program is ok for loading tasks, but I prefer to use SeeYou for creating and evaluating tasks and down loading. The waypoint list came from the exchange. Setting a task on the logger is ok, but the programming is a pain. I would recommend getting real familiar and play with it a bit before going out for the big task or contest.

Normally I use my Garmin 12xl for the task and running my filser 160.

I would buy another and I personally recommend SeeYou.

I have been using a Colibri for several years now and find that they are great.

Tango4. Yes you can set the declared task from the PC. With one of the early versions of LXe you could not. I have always been able to so with the DOS LXFAI program by editing the flight data file and loading that into the logger. With LXe ( late version ) you select the task from the tasks. then use a right click to declare task this is then copied into the Flight Information section which can then be sent to the logger.

John, When you say you can set the declared task in LXFAI, do you mean you build a task in the 'Task' area on the Flight Information' page by selecting the required turnpoints, or can you select, from a list of specified tasks, the one you want to insert in the Flight Information ? We can do the first method OK, but cannot find any way of selecting a pre-specified task from the list included in the *.da4 file which has been generated elsewhere. John G.

Hi John, The method I have used is with LXFAI is to build the task in the 'Task' area of Flight Info. I do not know of a method of copying an existing task into this area whilst using LXFAI. This can of course be done on the logger. They have appeared to use different logic between the Windows version ( LXe) and the DOS version ( LXFAI ).

I consider that a very small drawback. Declaring an existing task can be done in15 seconds.
